If an individual declares bankruptcy, is he required to notify creditors and if so, how’s he supposed to do it?

This person lost in small claims court and I was awarded $1500. Still haven’t collected it. The court and all parties involved are in California. Thanks. Yeah, I am concerned that the deadbeat will declare bankruptcy.
